This book summarizes the state of the art in magnetic resonance imaging of the brain using the higher magnetic field strength of 3 Tesla. In the first section, techniques including standard MR imaging, MR angiography, MR spectroscopy, MR tractography, diffusion-weighted imaging, perfusion imaging, and functional imaging at 3 T are fully described and differences between the diagnostic features at 3 T and at the lower field strength of 1.5 T (as conventionally used) are identified. In addition, safety issues relating to the installation and use of high-field magnets are discussed. The second section then describes and illustrates each of the main clinical applications of 3-T MRI - brain trauma, stroke, white matter disease, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, brain tumors, inflammatory disease, and psychiatric disorders. A chapter is also included on the value of 7-T imaging, from basic research to human applications. In amply documenting the benefits of the newer 3-T MRI systems, which offer unparalleled sensitivity and specificity, this superbly illustrated book will be of value to all trainee and practicing radiologists and neuroradiologists.
